It has been a while I was looking for a mini PC on which I could set up Fedora to use side by side with my Windows 10 rig.
But.. Why not install Fedora beside Windows 10 on the same computer ?
Simply because I love to play video games and I want to keep my Windows installation in peace, and mostyl because I need the space on my SSD for video games...
The Intel NUC seemed to be exactly what I was looking for, it is compact and the models with Intel i5 and i7 should be powerful enought to do the daily task I intend to do with it.
The only Intel model available in my area (around On Nut BTS) or online was the Intel NUC6i5SYH, I was hoping for an i7 model but it was impossible for me to get one quicky without paying extra fees.
I didn't have the change to go to Pantip but they might have i7 models over there.
My purpose is to use that NUC when I am working or coding from home, so it should be able to handle Google Chrome heavy processes with about 20 tabs open and of course deal efficiently with PHPStorm, Navicat and so on.
So far so good, I used my NUC everyday for a month now and everything is running smoothly with Google Chrome and PHPStorm together !
The intel NUC is not shipped with any SSD or RAM, you need to purchase and set it up by yourself. Here is the final configuration for my Intel NUC6i5SYH :
And the inside :
The Intel NUC6i5SYH box indicate it was manufactured on December 2016 which is a good news, the NUC I received is not an out of date one ! So far, the BIOS version was 0051, I updated it to the latest version 0057 and proceeded to the Fedora 25 installation.
First I had some bad time trying to install Fedora, had a problem with Dracut during the start of the Live USB and I could not access any installation process. The issue was due to the fact that I did not use the official software from Fedora : Fedora Media Writer. If you used an other software like UNetbootin or Rufus I doubt you can install Fedora, instead use Fedora Media Writer.
After installing Fedora 25 I installed updates and additionnal software, also removed software I wouldn't need.
I downloaded a backup of this website and started to work on it locally with PHPStorm, I created a new theme and updated some articles and I didn't see any problem, Fedora 25 is performing really nicely on this Intel NUC6i5SYH.
This Intel NUC6i5SYH performs really nicely about doing work I require and it is really quiet. For now I have not been disturbed by the fan, never heard it.
This model completely worth a shot if your top priority goes for price and size, moreover the features and configurations are quite impressive and powerful for most work use case.
I also played some games (Shovel Knight and Depths of Limbo) for an hour or two, everything was smooth, the top of the NUC got a bit warm but nothing to be worry about.
